Global Mobile Phone Sales in Decline
New research has found that global sales of mobile phones have declined for the first time since 2009. A report from analysts Gartner has shown that worldwide sales have declined by 2% year-on-year to 419.1m units in the first quarter of 2012. According to Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner, the decline is due in part to a slowdown in demand across the Asia/Pacific markets and also a relative lack of key handset launches in the first quarter. However the report did hold some positive news, particularly forSamsung who became the worlds top mobile phone vendor, displacingNokia who have held the top spot since 1998. Additionally, major uplifts are expected in the remainder of the year with the launch of the AppleiPhone 5 and strong home market expectations forHuawei,ZTE andLenovo. RIM did not fare so well in the survey, with its global market share declining to just 2.4%. However, the report highlighted that the forthcomingBB10 OS may lead to a turnaround in the fortunes of the Canadian manufacturer. According to the research, the smartphone market does on the whole continue to grow with sales up by 44.7% year-on-year. Apple and Samsung dominate this sector with a combined share of almost 50%.

iPhone/iPad App Review: Burnout Crash
It must be difficult to decide how to advertise a new app. Should you go for a simple teaser video with some gameplay, or collaborate with a relevant website to gain exposure? In the case of Burnout Crash, it was neither, and instead Electronic Arts employed David Hasselhoff to play the game, observed by a selection of fringe-culture weirdos. Easily one of the most bizarre campaigns for a mobile app weve seen, it suggested Burnout Crash was a completely off-the-wall game, rather than a simple spin-off of EAs most recent entry into the Burnout series of driving games. Except here, theres not a lot of driving to be done, asBurnout Crash is all about destruction rather than speed. So why David Hasselhoff? Who knows, and the few brief shots of the gameplay make almost no sense either, especially the closing look at a massive blue lobster. Perhaps EA expected everyone to recognize the Burnout Crash name, or wanted to do their best to cover up the repetitive gameplay? Hold on, were getting ahead of ourselves here, so lets start from the beginning. The idea of Burnout Crash for iOS is to create as much chaos and destruction at a road junction as you can, just by driving your car into the oncoming traffic. After the initial crash, you can bounce around the screen hitting more cars while your crash-o-meter fills up. When its full, an explosion propels you across the screen and blows up anything nearby. Each junction has three challenges, the standard Rush Hour, where you must rack up as many points as possible, Pile Up is for making chains of exploding vehicles, and finally Road Block is another high score challenge, but with the added awkwardness of trying to stop cars from passing the scene of the accident. Aside from the basic objective, there are other tasks to complete on each stage, including the destruction of certain vehicles, setting off a chain of explosions or gathering a certain number of points. With each completed task comes a star, with five available for each level, and these stars unlock new vehicles. The action is viewed from the top down, and the only controls are a swipe here and there. Complicated it isnt. Its also unsatisfying, because the flicking motion used to move your car after the first crash never feels suitably destructive, and youre too slow to catch up with the escaping cars in the irritating Road Block levels. Each level is also too similar, as no matter the destructive garnish EA has put over the top, the idea and execution is always the same. With 54 levels in total, this repetition hurts, and although the junctions change from time to time, its still not enough to hold your interest for long. I even found myself yearning for more traffic, especially at the start, to really get things going; a worry in such an explosive game. While the gameplay is simple, there are a few rules and regulations, but none are explained in the game. I recently praised Snapseed for its brilliant explanatory text, but Burnout Crash is the polar opposite, as it has absolutely no tutorial at all. Ive played the crash mode in Burnout Paradise, so had a vague idea of what was expected; but anyone playing for the first time will be left wondering just how much theyre missing due to lack of knowledge, at least for the first few levels. There are still some yellow indicators in Pile Up mode that Ive no idea what they mean. Then theres the sound. The Primatives Crash is fine as the catchy main menu tune, but in-game it all descends into a cacophony of explosions, tyre screeches, blasts of Spandau Ballets Gold, quips from annoying voice-over man and an awful boing noise every time you move your car. Its all much too loud, and distorted through my iPads speaker even at 1/3 volume. Its almost more preferable to play with the audio muted, but thankfully you can tweak the audio settings in the main menu. Its not that Burnout Crash is a bad game, its not, as all the destruction is fun for an hour or so, but after that time it does tend to lose its appeal. Theres a good game in there somewhere, but it feels rushed and under-developed, as if they wanted to do more with it, but werent given the time. At 2.99, its also quite expensive. On the positive side, it is universal for the iPhone and iPad, plus theres both Game Center and Origin support too. If youre wanting some car-based action with lots of crashes for your iPhone, Burnout Crash is acceptable enough, but take a look atReckless Getaway too. Its also universal, costs just 0.69 and has both a driving based destruction mode and a fun getaway chase mode. It also looks and sounds great, has seen regular updates and plays brilliantly. As it stands at the moment, Burnout Crash is a missed opportunity, no matter what The Hoff wants you to believe. Share This If you enjoyed this article then let your friends know about it:

Samsung Galaxy S3 Launch: UK Release Date Set For May 30th
Samsung finally revealed the hotly anticipated Galaxy S3 yesterday evening, in a multi million pound launch event at Londons Earls Court Exhibition Centre. The handset runs the latest version of Android 4.0.4 on its 1.4 GHz quad-core Exynos processor with 1GB of RAM. The screen is an impressive 4.8-inch 720p Super HD AMOLED screen, which, whilst big has a thin bezel around it, so is perfectly holdable. Figures like that would usually have us reaching for the charger, but the new processor is said to be much more power efficient, and the battery is a whopping 2100mAh, which is roughly 30% more powerful than the rival quad-core HTC One X. The rear camera is 8MP and super-fast, taking 3.3 still shots per second, and 1080p video. The front camera is a surprise at 1.9MP, which is larger than expected, but maybe necessary for facial tracking. The S3 will be able to tell if you are looking at it and stay on if you are reading something, rather than dim the screen on a timer as is the norm. The Galaxy S3 was given a more rounded appearence than the S2, opting for natural curves and soft edges. Samsung have said they were inspired by nature when desiging the handset, which explains why we were serenaded by whale noises and birdsong during the build up. The handset was demoed in two colours, pebble blue and ceramic white, for business and pleasure respectively. Samsung also described the phone as being designed for humans focussing on the social sharing features of the handset. S Beam is a close proximity file sharing feature that uses NFC and wifi to send files between handsets. Facial recognition software will also allow users to instantly share photos with people in their contact list immediately. S Voice brings an air of Siri to the precedings, allowing users to look insane whilst talking to no-one. You may be able to wake the phone from sleep with a voice command, but we always found the wake button much quicker. Hopefully local search facilities will be enabled upon release, (something Apple have still failed to do here in Europe) and bring this functionality out of novelty status. The S3 will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, with this expandable upto a further 64GB with the addition of a micro SDXC card. Users will also be given 50GB of Dropbox cloud storage free for two years, which should see through a 24month contract. The Galaxy S3 will be released as a 3G HDSPA+ version on May 29th in Europe, with a 4G LTE version following in countries lucky enough to have super-fast mobile broadband, in June of this year. The Korean tech giants were keen to play down the numbers and the launch focussed on what the phone could do rather than boast about specifications or previous succeses. Of course, they could have boasted had they wished Figures released recently by London firm Strategy Analytics revealed that Samsung held 30% of the smartphone market, beating Apples 24%. Samsung also accounted for 24.5% of the global mobile handset market, passing Nokia, who have been on a downward slide of late. UK Retailers are currently rubbing their hands in anticipation of the May 29th launch, as the Galaxy S2 sold like hotcakes. Some information lacking from the launch event was any solid details on pricing. However, retailers will be keen to start pre-sales so expect full details soon. We expect the handset to be offered on contract from the 35 per month mark, with the upfront cost varying depending on which model you plump for. Those who wish to buy the phone outright rather than tie into a lengthy contract should expect prices starting around 500. We will of course be sure to bring you any deatils of availability and pricing as soon as we find out.

Developers Take Note: DuckDuckHack Launched
If you are a regular reader you know that I made the full switch to the DuckDuckGo search engine some time ago. I had plenty of reasons for this move, from Googles pollution of the search results with ads and cross-promo of their own services, over privacy concerns, to the fact that DuckDuckGos results are pretty good, most of the time. One thing that I really like about the search engine are the hacks that are displayed on top of the results. Hacks provide you with direct information, and a link to the original source. If you look up the name of a politician, you may see a Wikipedia entry at the top, if you search for lyrics, you may see the first lines of it right on the page. The Goodies page highlights the sources that are currently integrated into the DuckDuckGo search engine. To improve the feature, DuckDuckHack was launched yesterday officially which aims to provide third party developers with the tools to create custom hacks for the search engine. The search engine supports four different types of plugins: Goodies, which are made up of calculations and cheat sheets. Spice, which use external API calls to display information Fathead, querying keyword databases Longtail, accessing full-text data Different programming or scripting languages are used depending on the plugin type. Goodies for instance are written in Perl, while Spice plugins in JavaScript. Not all plugins that developers create will go live on the search engine. They are posted for discussion first, before they may or may not be integrated into the live search engine. Ideas by users without programming experience are posted on the same website, which may be a good starting point for developers who need inspiration. While the makers of DuckDuckGo have the final say in this regard, it is unlikely that they will block the integration of a popular plugin. This may also be a great way of webmasters to bring their service in front of a larger audience. New plugins are announced over on Twitter. Whats your take on this development?

Popularity of Online Bingo
It is said that gambling is one of the oldest form of entertainment used by man. It is hardly surprising considering the amount of thrill and excitement attached to it. It is also no surprise that the tradition of gambling has passed from generation to generation among mankind. Although we no longer gamble in the same way that our ancestors did, we now have highly evolved forms and ways of gambling. The fact is that with time, gambling also evolved to keep pace with the progress in other fields. As you can now see, with the advent of computers and the internet, one of the most popular forms of gambling these days is online gambling. It is also no surprise that when you come to the virtual world, the easiest and the most popular game is bingo. It is fairly simple to play so that even novices have a chance of winning big money even as they are starting out. You dont need to study the game and get expertise in it to play and win big money. That is why most people, even if they play other online games, love to play online bingo. The popularity of online bingo reached such immense proportions that more and more sites have sprung up in the recent past to address this ever increasing demand. The internet literally has thousands of websites offering online bingo. Before a novice starts out to play online bingo, it is important to consider a few aspects. Firstly, the site one chooses should be safe and should not pose any financial or personal risk to the player in terms of information revealed on the site. Secondly, there should be a large variety of games as well as jackpots, cash prizes, joining bonuses, etc. These are useful parameters to judge an online bingo site with.

Jackpot Capital Casino Slots Winner
Last night, a very lucky online casino player at Jackpot Capital Casino had a great winning streak, and won over $50,000. The winning player, Bernie C., is a pensioner who started the evening with a deposit of $200. Bernie C.s $200 deposit started to grow after he had a few big wins on various online casino slot games that he decided to play. In less than one hour, Bernie already had a balance of $14,000. After that, Bernie got a much bigger win of $16K which he won in the Crazy Vegas online casino slot game that has 5 reels and 20 paylines. After the $16K win, Bernie played another slot game, the Diamond Mine Deluxe. He wagered the max bet on this single payline slot machine game, and came away winning the maximum amount that a jackpot on this slot game pays, at $45K. The winning spin was achieved when Bernie got two multiplier symbols that formed part of the winning slots combination on the screen. The lucky winner has decided to use his winnings to take his wife on a cruise, since he feels that she deserves it. He said: When I think of how hard I worked to earn a buck all those years, and then I go and win a years salary just having fun playing slot machines on the computer! Being a somewhat cautious player, Bernie explained to the Jackpot Capital Manager, Oliver Smith, that he was tempted to quit while I was ahead, but I just had a feeling I should keep playing while luck was on my side. Jackpot Capital is run on Real Time Gaming online casino software. Players can also enjoy the Wheres Bunny Easter promotion with $50,000 in prizes. The promo ends on 8th April 2012.

This Could Be Firefoxs New Design
Changes that are made to a web browser that you are using on a daily basis can have a devastating effect. We have seen this happen several times in the past when Mozilla made changes to the design of the Firefox web browser. Especially the move from Firefox 3 to 4 caused an uproar, with part of the userbase still rejecting to update to any version beyond Firefox 3. Probably the two biggest changes in recent times where the removal of the status bar, and its replacement with the add-on bar, and the new Firefox single button menu that replaced the standard menu of the browser. New mockups posted on the Mozilla Wiki website show how Firefox could once again receive a visual overhaul, which in turn could again alienate part of the browsers user base. It needs to be noted that mockups are not final designs, and that nothing is set into stone just yet. Firefox Australis Probably the biggest change that you will notice right away is the missing Firefox button. The button has been moved down to the address bar of the Internet browser. The new panel menu displays popular functionality, like private browsing, saving pages, and offers a link to the options menu. Unlike in Chrome, where everything is fixed in position, Mozilla plans to provide Firefox users with customization options. The new customization page opens in a tab in the browser, instead of a new window like it is currently. Here it is then possible to customize the new panel menu. It is for instance possible to drag and drop icons on or off the menu, or one of the toolbars directly. Keep in mind that this is a mockup, and that icons and options are missing from it as a consequence. It is also interesting to note that themes are displayed in the customization tab. These background themes can be applied to the browser directly. The customization options become available under firefox:customize. There are also options to change the layout to display tabs in a sidebar instead of the top, and to switch from an icon only menu to icons and text, or only text. The missing title has not been mentioned yet. If things go as planned, Mozilla could do away with the title bar, and display page titles only in the browsers tabs. One issue here is that larger page titles cannot be displayed in full anymore. Additional mockups have been posted that highlight changes that are not related to the Australis design. An update for Firefoxs new tab page is planned, that is, among other things, allowing users to add their own sites to the display. Firefox will even suggest websites, likely based on popularity. It also features additional links, to the recently closed websites, bookmarks, and apps, as well as a search option. Last but not least, the new translate option of the browser. Firefox translate will be more versatile than Googles implementation, offering to translate all or a selection of the current page. Options to always and never translate a language or a language on a particular site are provided. Whats your take on this design change? Step in the right direction, or something that is making things complicated?
